POPPY DAY
MAY 19
Volunteers needed!
In 1923, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion Family in memory of the soldiers who fought on the battlefields during World War I. The poppy was the famous wartime poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. |

FILL THE HILL WITH FLAGS FOR OUR FATHERS

HONOR YOUR DAD! HELP THE POST! DONATE TO THE WWII MEMORIAL! JOIN US SATURDAY MAY 26, 2012
Thank you so much for your faithful support of Fill the Hill the last three years. Your donations have raised almost $4000.00 for Post 105. This money has gone to reduce the debt incurred for building the new kitchen. In addition to the funds raised it has been overwhelming to see so many flags flying on the hill. Each flag represents love and respect for a dear family member or a friend.
Once again we are going to do this on Memorial Day Weekend. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the WWII Memorial that is being built in Decatur . You may pay tribute to your loved one by purchasing a flag for $10.00. Anyone you wish to honor (it does not have to be only Dads) will be welcome. The flags will be placed on the hill north of the parking lot Saturday May 26, 2012. There will be a special ceremony held at 4:00pm, when the names of the honored will be read. The flags are then yours to take with you. An ice cream social will follow the ceremony and we hope you will all join us for the goodies.
